How to buy the right injection molding robot

With the progress of technology, technology has improved our quality of life and industrial manufacturing capabilities.

Nowadays, there are many plastic machinery and equipment on the market, and a wide variety of injection molding robots for us to choose from.

Injection molding manipulator because of the different drive, stroke …… and other inconsistent criteria; for our procurement selection, what kind of manipulator is suitable for our production?

Rely on some guidelines to make smart decisions. To reasonably compare the different items, the basic premise is gradual; based on mastering the basic items, you will also be able to make an informed choice when selecting a robot.

Payload of the robot arm

Payload and the spacing to the robot linear axis point of the function formula. To ensure that the manipulator can control the parts, to be more specific turn distance and the manipulator can apply can be used turn distance.

How big is the stroke of the robot

The distance a robot can travel is called the stroke, and to make it simple to understand, this distance is usually defined by the number of axes: in this article, we will use the X, Y and Z axes to define it. Please note that not all manipulator manufacturers define the travel in this way. Some manufacturers define the axis naming rules in a different way.

X-axis

This distance is generally called the lead stroke and its size is related to the thickness of the part. For example, in order to manipulate a bucket, sufficient travel is required to extend the robot and pull the bucket out of the mold.

Y-axis

Also called traverse travel, the amount of travel back and forth depends on whether the manipulator is lowering the part at the side or the rear of the machine. Parts utilizing this stroke are just to jump over the machine.

Z-axis

This distance is defined as the vertical travel and is determined by the machine height and the desired drop height, i.e. the robot must be high enough to allow the part to jump over the injection molding machine; and low enough so that the part can be dropped at a reasonable height above the floor.

The easiest way

If you are new to the factory floor, why not draw up a layout plan. The layout not only identifies each stroke, but also identifies important things on the floor plan, such as auxiliary equipment, support columns and clearance areas.

How to evaluate performance

Manipulator performance is often assumed in terms of peak velocities. However, this is not the whole story unless we know that the acceleration shows the speed of two manipulators, one with a peak speed of 4m/s and the other with 3m/s. One might infer that the “fastest” manipulator is the one with the higher peak speed. However, two manipulators can travel the same distance of 2800mm in 1 second.

This is possible because the robot with the lower rate peak has a higher acceleration (45m/s2) than the robot with the higher rate peak, which is 13.3m/s2. The time taken by the robot to travel a specific distance is more useful. This information should be obtained from the manufacturer.

What about price?

The use of robots can reduce cycle time, in industrial reality, for example, a factory with 6,000 hours of production can achieve significant savings of.

A 1% reduction in robot downtime for a 1800 ton injection molding machine will save the factory approximately $10,000 per year.

For a 200 ton injection molding machine, for example, a 10 second cycle time reduction of 0.5 seconds each time would save approximately $15,000 per year.

For some operations, the cost of purchasing a robot may be justified. A study of the long-term effects of different robots is well worth this effort.

Finally, when making a purchasing decision, consider that the robot’s performance, reliability, safety and cost play an important role in the overall system operation, so that the robot you choose should meet the purpose of your system.
